Database-as-a-Service on your terms with Nutanix Era

September 21, 2021 | min

Databases exist in pretty much every organization today – they’re everywhere – you simply can’t perform and compete without one. Regardless of organization size and complexity, database analysts and administrators work tirelessly to manage the data and assist stakeholders in extracting the business value the database provides - from competitive intelligence, to driving  strategic initiatives.

Nutanix recently commissioned IDC to write an InfoBrief * to discuss the challenges and complexities of managing databases. The results were quite eye opening:

  • 73% of organizations have different database management processes for on-premises vs. cloud deployments.
  • 75% of RDBMS deployments remain hosted in private clouds.
  •  63% believe that a common database management across private and public clouds will be highly beneficial.

Many organizations are burdened with the complexity of managing the life cycle of databases, particularly on-prem- as evidenced by this study. This includes provisioning of new databases, management of existing databases, and the many 2nd-day tasks that come with a database’s life cycle such as backup/recovery, upgrades, patching, scaling and data management.

Nutanix released its Era® database management software around 3 years ago bringing simplicity and automation to database management.  We envision a future where our customers can operate and consume database services through APIs in a consistent manner, on premises, in the cloud, or across cloud. We provide the means for our customers to automate database tasks in transparent ways that give them the benefits of automation while retaining control over their OS and their database versions and customizations. Since launch, Nutanix Era has solved and delivered value based outcomes to our customers delivering exceptional ROI, as proven with the Forrester Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) Report.

Now let me introduce our latest capabilities.

Simplified Storage Scaling

Era manages the most popular database engines like PostgreSQL®, Microsoft® SQL Server, and Oracle® Database across hybrid multicloud environments. Customers can now easily and quickly scale database storage online, turning days of planning and testing into a one-click operation.

Enhanced Governance for Databases

Era now delivers increased security capabilities through role-based access controls for  shared access to databases and to database operations and tasks. This allows customers to easily implement their own security and compliance policies for database controls and accessibility. For instance, database administrators can use the new RBAC capabilities to  share specific data with developers, while retaining control.

Multi-region Database Failover Capabilities

Customers can now enable Era to be a highly available, multi-cloud control plane for database management. This compliments highly available databases by ensuring both the database itself and management of the database are protected against site-wide failures.

Support for ServiceNow Workflows

Nutanix has integrated Nutanix Era® into the ServiceNow® platform. Using the Nutanix Era Plugin for Database Management integration to ServiceNow, Era and ServiceNow customers can use standard workflow processes to ease database requests and operations. Please read our blog to learn more about how ServiceNow workflows manage your database requests.

Database-as-a-Service (DbaaS) on your terms is not a vision, it’s reality.  I would encourage you to learn more about all of Era’s capabilities by visiting the Era website.  While you are there, sign up for an Era test drive. It’s the best way to learn and experience Era’s one-click, end-to-end Database-as-a-Service - on your terms.
