Logical Resource Isolation with Collaboration and Access Control

The Nutanix Projects capability provides a logical namespace to organize, manage, share and isolate infrastructure resources across departments or tenants through role-based access control (RBAC) to ensure compliance and security.

Key Capabilities

Organization of Resources: Logical Namespace

  • Resource Isolation: "Projects" creates logical isolation for infrastructure entities such as Virtual Machines (VMs), Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), allowing each project to manage its entities without affecting others.
  • Shared Infrastructure: "Projects" supports multiple teams sharing the same underlying infrastructure such as clusters while still achieving logical isolation, enabling efficient resource utilization.
  • Flexible Resource Organization: "Projects" provides an intuitive organizational layer to manage resource distribution and organize workloads across teams, or departments or tenants
    • "Projects" enables users to organize workloads across shared clusters, leveraging Nutanix's scalable infrastructure capabilities.

Collaboration with Access Control and Compliance

Collaboration with role based access

  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): "Projects" enables administrators to assign granular roles to users, determining access levels per project. This capability allows users to access only their designated resources while maintaining security and compliance.
  • User Management: "Projects" allows administrators to assign specific roles to the users within a particular "project", enabling differentiated access. For example, a user might have full access to manage VMs in one project while only view access in another.
  • Secure and Compliant Collaboration: Nutanix "Projects" enforces access control policies, enhancing security and access compliance across teams, or departments or tenants sharing a unified infrastructure.

Entity association, creation and management

Controlled entity creation and management.

  • Role-Specific Permissions: "Projects" restricts entity creation and management to users with appropriate permissions, helping to prevent unauthorized actions.
  • Flexible Entity Association and Management: Users with the appropriate roles can create and manage entities such as VMs and subnets within their designated projects, supporting operational autonomy for individual teams.
    • "Projects" allows for the association of VPCs and subnets, offering logical network segmentation for each project, thus enhancing both isolation and flexibility within shared environments.
  • Read-Only Access: For enhanced governance, users assigned as viewers within the context of a particular "project" can view entities like VMs without making any changes, providing transparency without compromising control.

Project-Centric Views

Focused and Efficient Resource Management

  • User-Specific Project Views: Projects offers a streamlined "project-centric" view for non-admin users, focusing only on resources and entities they have access to, improving usability.
  • Efficient Navigation and Management: By offering a centralized view of resources within a particular "project", users can efficiently manage, view, and interact with infrastructure elements, providing an organized operational experience.

Quota Management for Resource Governance

Manage resource limits per project

  • Resource Quotas: "Projects" enables administrators to set quotas on resource usage per project, allowing effective governance and helping to prevent a single/particular project from monopolizing shared resources.
  • Customizable Limits: Set customizable limits on resources like CPU, memory, and storage per "project" to manage and cap consumption within defined boundaries, helping to optimize resource utilization.

Showback for Usage Insights:

Project-based showback capabilities are available on enabling NCM Self-Service and Cost Governance capabilities.

  • Cost Transparency: Easily track resource costs per project, promoting budget awareness and accountability among teams, and allowing stakeholders to see actual resource consumption costs.
  • Detailed Usage Insights: Provides granular visibility into resource usage across projects, helping teams identify cost drivers and make decisions on resource consumption.
  • Team Accountability: By associating costs directly with project resource consumption, Nutanix project showback encourages responsible usage.

Key Benefits of Nutanix Projects

  • Streamlined Resource Organization through logical segmentation of underlying infrastructure resources
  • Collaboration & Access Control Collaboration and resource sharing while managing access compliance  with RBAC
  • Focused, Project-Centric Views to streamline the navigation, oversight and access of entitled resources
  • Optimized Resource Usage with quotas governance to configure resource limits and help avoid overconsumption
  • Show-back for Cost Transparency: With NCM, easily track resource costs per project, for budget awareness and accountability

License

All the project capabilities (except Showback) are available to customers who have any Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) tier license and are using Prism Central with AHV

Project Showback capabilities and using Projects across multiple Prism Central instances or multiple clouds or with ESXi is available with Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) with a pro or ultimate tier license.
