Fundación Progreso y Salud, an Andalusian public sector entity, managed to modernise its traditional infrastructure with Nutanix, resulting in a flexible, secure and efficient solution. By automating and simplifying the IT environment, they have significantly reduced the time spent on administrative tasks, allowing them to focus on key areas such as security, management, and service improvement. Additionally, they value the platform's stability, dedicated support, and ability to continuously evolve with advanced tools such as AI and analytics. On its path to the hybrid cloud, Nutanix is presented as a strategic ally in Fundación Progreso y Salud’s digital transformation.
With Nutanix's hyperconverged platform, the Consejería de Salud y Consumo de la Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government's Health and Consumer Affairs Department) has managed to reduce the time spent on administrative tasks by up to 50%.
The Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud entity (Andalusian Public Foundation for Progress and Health) is dependent on the Consejería de Salud y Consumo de la Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government's Health and Consumer Affairs Department). It currently has 400 employees and its main lines of activity include promoting research and innovation (R&D&I) in the health sector contributing to the development of excellent bio-health research, as well as specialized training in professional technical skills and accreditation through the Agencia de Calidad Sanitaria de Andalucía [Andalusian Health Quality Agency] or ACSA.
The Fundación has always seen IT as a way for better efficiency. For this reason, and hand in hand with IaaS365, they opted for Nutanix hyperconvergence technology to transform their technological infrastructure, optimize their processes, become more sustainable, and significantly reduce management time.
Efficiency
Reduced IT team time and effort to manage the infrastructure
Sustainability
Power efficiency and electricity consumption and cost savings
Support
Quality, proximity, and expertise
Initially, what stood out to us was the disruptive nature of the hardware solution, the hyperconverged platform. However, we soon realized that Nutanix offered much more through its software tools, services, and support quality.
The Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud was in a process of constant growth. Thus, it faced the challenge of incorporating new systems without having the capacity or resources to do so. They needed to be more efficient, reduce team workloads, and also be able to integrate heterogeneous environments more easily.
In response to this situation, the Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud launched a project for technological infrastructure renovation. After the public tender opening and different market options evaluation, they opted for Nutanix's hyperconverged technology. The Spanish company IaaS365, a provider of global technology solutions and services and a certified Nutanix partner, was in charge of the deployment. As the awarded contractor for infrastructure and platform experience management, IaaS365 has been responsible for the ongoing liaison with Nutanix.
From the moment the project was awarded, the new infrastructure took just three months to be fully deployed and operational. In that initial stage, a planned migration project was carried out to transfer all systems and services to the new Nutanix infrastructure.
Nutanix architecture at the Fundación is deployed in different environments. The main cluster (in its location at the data processing center in Cartuja, Seville, headquarters) includes four Lenovo HX5521 nodes. Each one is independent and features redundant power and cooling supplies. The Nutanix hyperconvergence software, Acropolis Operating System (AOS Pro), runs on these nodes and the Nutanix AHV hypervisor has been deployed. In addition, the Nutanix Pulse solution helps to identify potential configuration issues and detect new possibilities to further optimize clusters.
Thanks to this technology, the Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud has achieved important benefits and, above all, enhanced the IT department staff experience.
Efficiency and sustainability stand out among the main benefits that the project provides. On one hand, one of the factors that stood out to the Fundación was the reduction in time and effort required by the technology team to manage the infrastructure, deploy new machines, or even clone storage. In fact, the Fundación estimates that 50% of the time previously dedicated to IT service management is now allocated to more strategic tasks, such as security, enhancing the governance model, internal organization, and the organization's growth.
On the other hand, the efficiency and cost savings offered by Nutanix's hyperconvergent infrastructure have been key to the Fundación's commitment to sustainability and innovation in the health sector. Thus, this technology, combined with a new data center cooling system and the commissioning of photovoltaic solar panels, has achieved electricity savings of between 41% and 16% on the power bill over different periods of 2023.
Finally, another factor that the Fundación highly values and that influenced the initial choice of Nutanix, is the quality of the support service, its proximity, and the level of specialization that both Nutanix and IaaS365 provide.
The project undertaken by the Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud was clearly designed with future prospects in mind. Both Nutanix and IaaS365 have become leading technology partners and they are currently assessing the need to set up a disaster recovery environment, either in the public cloud or at one of the physical locations.
Additionally, the Fundación will soon face significant changes, similar to those that initially prompted them to start working with Nutanix. A new Andalusia Health Institute will be created from January 1, 2025. It is currently in the process of being established and will integrate Fundación Progreso y Salud (Foundation for Progress and Health), Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública (Andalusian School of Public Health), and Consejería de Salud de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government's Health Affairs Department). Technology will once again play a crucial role in adapting to new needs, integrating systems, or making modifications to the IT platform.
