Challenges
Halmstad Energi och Miljö is defined as a critical infrastructure by Swedish authorities and runs 24/7 operations with on-call work purchased from the municipality's IT department. Due to previous guidelines, a plethora of virtualized servers have emerged - 100 of them for 300 employees - while Halmstad Energi och Miljö is about to technically separate from the municipality with its own network and Active Directory.
The virtualization technology used previously was expensive and took place in an operating environment that often reached maximum capacity.
Solution
To reduce virtualization costs and increase control, Halmstad Energi och Miljö chose to use Nutanix AHV Virtualization. The company is currently in the process of moving all virtual servers to Nutanix AHV using the Nutanix Move migration tool.
Customer Outcomes
The operation of the virtual servers is simple and requires little time and attention from the IT-technicians at Halmstad Energi och Miljö. It also means that on-call support can be purchased from the municipality without having to spend money and time on any major training initiatives for the on-call workers, which frees up time and resources for Halmstad Energi och Miljö's own IT department.
Next Steps
The first step is to work with various network and hardware suppliers to set up servers, backups and a new network and sync everything to Microsoft 365.
Halmstad Energi och Miljö is also investigating a virtual desktop solution from Nutanix so that consultants can easily enter and work at the company.
"The goal is for us to be an independent IT unit in two years, so that Halmstad Energi och Miljö can progress more quickly in the future," says Hampus Berg.
