Epic on Nutanix: Insel Gruppe AG completes full technology change with Nutanix

With Nutanix, Insel Gruppe AG can say goodbye to SAN and the classic 3-tier infrastructure for a new hospital information and control system and instead rely on a private cloud.

Overview

With the new hospital information and control system (known locally by the German acronym KISS), Insel Gruppe aims to set new standards and significantly develop digital medicine. With Nutanix, Epic becomes the joint digital working platform for the entire Insel Gruppe.

Key Results

Increased Efficiency & Automation
Backup & Storage
Security & Monitoring
All information about patient treatment is collected quickly and centrally in Epic.

Highly automated, hyper-converged storage that scales with the data.
With new technology, Nutanix offers an efficient SOC with security audits and reporting, and guards against network threats.

With Nutanix, we achieve this performance. The project is a lighthouse for hospital IT in Switzerland.

Challenge

The current hospital information system is coming to the end of its life. Insel Gruppe has chosen Epic as a new, comprehensive integrated hospital information and control system (KISS). The new solution is capable of digitally networking the entire Insel Gruppe as well as patients and referring doctors. To ensure the availability of KISS, the server landscape (approx. 600 servers plus storage) must be virtualized and the integration to a private cloud must be guaranteed. This virtual platform is operated by the company Nutanix.

Solution

With over 12,000 employees (about 250 of them in IT), Insel Gruppe is the largest employer in the canton of Bern and, with around 860,000 patients, it is also the largest medical care system in Switzerland. In addition, the hospital association is the most important advanced education institution for young doctors and training company for numerous professions.

Epic’s new hospital information and control system connects all departments, hospitals, and professional groups within Insel Gruppe.

Together with the Bernese partner and Nutanix Cloud Champion Amanox, Epic was implemented on Nutanix. All parties worked together on behalf of Insel Gruppe to ensure the solution is tailored to the specific requirements of Epic. “It was absolutely the right decision. Nutanix allowed us to achieve the performance,” says Christoph Weber, Head of ICT Operations, Insel Gruppe AG.

Throughout the project, Nutanix worked closely with Insel Gruppe to ensure that all requirements were met. Weber explains: “In the end, for this platform integration project, precise, detailed planning was essential, the ultimate requirement.

For the implementation and integration of a new KISS on the platform, the processes, both clinical and technical, must be identified, integrated and implemented to achieve a real increase in efficiency for the company.

Customer Outcome

Insel Gruppe now has a modern, private cloud-based, hyper-convergent infrastructure (HCI). Clinical processes can be designed more efficiently, and automation is increased considerably. Epic on Nutanix also covers the need for disaster recovery. At the same time, security monitoring has been massively increased, thanks to its own SOC and microsegmentation on the cluster. After all, security is of central importance, especially in the highly sensitive health sector.

Insel Gruppe is setting new standards and decisively furthering digital medicine.

Next Steps

The IT team of Insel Gruppe has various exciting approaches in mind for the future: Artificial intelligence, big data, and personalized medicine will shape the healthcare of the future. Digital networking creates the prerequisites for these developments.
