As a leader in the Korean dairy processing industry, Maeil Dairies is looking to enhance its competitiveness by accelerating the speed of mission-critical applications and innovations by setting up a hybrid cloud environment – merging MS Azure public cloud and on-premises systems.

VDI for its R&D division and business sites were also merged, accelerating the management of VDIs as well as the speed of mission-critical tasks. With Nutanix Cloud Platform, the team also enjoyed ease of use in the management of multi-clouds and virtualization of on-premises infrastructures.

The application environment set up on the Nutanix Cloud Platform offers a faster performance environment for research data management, on-site inventory & logistics systems, and for processing finance & accounting workloads. Its outstanding stability helps maintain business continuity on the ground, even at the edge points. Nutanix hypervisor provides easy-to-use migration and integrated control for dispersed VMs, so we plan to use Nutanix as our hub for a multi-cloud environment that connects and manages our assets in MS Azure, AWS and our on-premise environment.

CHALLENGES

Maeil Dairies is expanding its dairy product portfolio and launching health functional food with proven effects in disease research, at a time when the market for powdered milk and milk is shrinking due to an aging population. The Korean dairy producer has seven production sites and a R&D Center, which boasts over 200 research and academic outcomes and citations published in acclaimed journals.

In 2019, Maeil Dairies introduced MS Azure to modernize its infrastructure for digital transformation and migrated most of its workload and applications to public cloud. Although the public cloud enhanced the company’s innovation capabilities, sensitive workloads such as R&D center data management and on-site work systems, had to stay in an on-premises environment to reduce risks and maintain compliance.

Moreover, obsolete infrastructure remained even after cloud migration, causing availability issues. The dairy maker had to invest tremendous effort into controlling virtual machines (VM) management points scattered across multiple infrastructures according to the varied life cycles of each VM.

SOLUTION

Recognizing the need to introduce a private cloud, Maeil Dairies decided to adopt Nutanix Cloud Platform, known for its superb performance and stability, to guarantee improved overall speed and high availability. With the Nutanix hybrid cloud solution, Maeil could easily manage the integration of various VMs, enabling fast operation and convenient migration of data from the R&D Center and on-site workstations to on-premises systems.

CUSTOMER OUTCOMES

Tightened security of R&D data using VDI deployed in a private environment

Maeil Dairies seamlessly integrated R&D workloads into Nutanix by migrating applications across hypervisors for R&D environment. They now manage their R&D data in the data center located in Korea, and researchers are only allowed access to R&D data through an app hosted on the VDI infrastructure. It prevents the leak of sensitive and confidential research data.

Reduced response time for R&D document access by 5O%

“Maeil researchers can now search and view documents on research topics, methods, and results regarding dairy, health and nutrition much faster than before, response time were cut by 50%,” said Chan-Hong Ahn. For this, they use a solution portal that provides Enterprise Content Management (ECM) in a VDI environment based on the Nutanix Cloud Platform.

“Improved access to R&D data plays an essential role in expanding the research horizons by facilitating cooperation for the analysis of existing research and swift verification of new studies. With Nutanix, the speed and ease of using R&D data has helped strengthen and broaden the scope of cooperation amongst our researchers and ultimately advance the quality and competitiveness of their discoveries to drive the company to a brighter future,” said Chan-Hong Ahn.

Fast and easy migration of workloads between clouds, lowered IT workloads

Nutanix Move on Nutanix Platform migrates various types of VMs into the private environment and helps run VM immediately after the migration with just a few clicks.

“Before Nutanix, it used to take a lot of time to purchase and install separate hardware to build a new development environment. However, after deploying the Nutanix Cloud Platform, the cost of introducing a new development environment dropped as it enabled easy migration of the development environment to on-premises from the public cloud. Now, we can optimize the use of on-premises and public cloud depending on the new application or workloads requirements,” said Chan-Hong Ahn.

NEXT STEPS

Maeil Dairies plans to complete the establishment of Nutanix Hybrid Cloud platform as a hub for Maeil infrastructure, as Nutanix supports integrated management and flawless communication among public cloud services such as MS Azure and AWS. This will significantly improve the outcomes from its digital transformation efforts and allow the complete overhaul of the work and business IT systems at Maeil Dairies.
