South Taranaki District Council Advances Digital Strategy with Nutanix-powered ASI Cloud

South Taranaki District Council has taken the next step forward in its cloud-first digital strategy by migrating its IT infrastructure to a Nutanix-powered cloud environment hosted by ASI Solutions. The service is located in CDC datacentres who provide a 100% availability guarantee and are certified carbon neutral. This move unlocked operational efficiency and ensured business continuity with robust disaster recovery capabilities.

Challenge

One of New Zealand’s smaller councils in terms of population (29,025 residents), South Taranaki District Council serves a large area on New Zealand’s North Island, encompassing seven main towns and multiple remote sites. The Council is chartered with a broad range of responsibilities, from managing local roads, water treatment, wastewater plants, waste management, building and planning controls to economic and community development, community facilities and community hubs – dubbed “Library Plus”. Despite the dispersed nature of these sites, all require seamless connectivity and reliable IT infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

When its existing infrastructure neared the end of its lifecycle in 2023, South Taranaki District Council sought a solution that could act as a stepping-stone between on-premise infrastructure and their cloud-first digital strategy.

Solution

The council chose ASI Cloud powered by the Nutanix Cloud Platform over other hyperscale cloud providers. “After researching hyperscale cloud providers, the transition looked very costly, especially when considering ingress and egress charges. But with ASI it was all included, so it was extremely competitive on price without sacrificing functionality,” Stephen Mileham, IT Operations Lead at South Taranaki District Council said.

The fact that the council's previous on-premises infrastructure was also built on the Nutanix platform was another key reason for choosing the ASI Cloud powered by Nutanix. The council’s IT team was already familiar with Nutanix’s technology and Mileham was confident that the migration would be seamless.

Customer Outcome

“Some of our business-critical applications were never designed with cloud in mind,” he said. “With ASI Cloud powered by the Nutanix Cloud Platform, we were able to easily migrate these applications from our on-premise HCI environment to their datacentre with little complication. ASI also offered disaster recovery capabilities with replication to another site on New Zealand's South Island which gave us a lot of confidence.”

Without having to maintain on-premise infrastructure, the Council's IT team can invest time back into critical areas such as enhancing cybersecurity, improving network infrastructure, and adopting new technologies.
